I started writing Daevas sometime in 2016, almost a decade ago! Originally, I was inspired a bit by Game of Thrones wanting to focus more on the aspects behind the wall than the political landscapes that’s typical of most fantasy novels. There are bits and pieces of politics thrown in, but it serves as a very distant backdrop. Overtime, the book changed into something I believe is pretty wonderful. The book grew along with me, in a sense– becoming more introspective, literary in its complexity.
This book was a labor of love. Listening to a song I loved and having it on constant repeat helped me push through writer’s block and get it finished. I’d have it on repeat for up to a week until I got tired of it. I’m not kidding! I can write up to 3-4 chapters if a song really resonates with me. It’s pretty wild.
If you’re wondering about a playlist, I don’t really have one. I’ll try making one for y’all, though!
Thoughts on Main Character: Ari
In the beginning, I really thought of Ari as a lil smol bean. Innocent little cinnamon roll thrust into a violent conflict between humans and demons. And well, yeah, that really was kind of what he was, at first. Not gonna spoil it for those who haven’t read Daevas -II- yet. Ari is full uncertainty yet still curious to learn more, to know more. I admire those qualities about him. He’s afraid but he does it anyway. He is quite genuine and sincere to those who has won his heart. He’s determined. Willing to risk it all to win your heart.
And you know what? I think that’s what made Auovin fall for Ari the way that he did. *Spoiler* It’s that kind of love he craved after experiencing two great loves that emotionally crippled him. *Spoiler*
On the other hand, he can be very stubborn, impulsive, and can have tunnel-vision. A bit obsessive too, haha. More gets added to that list in the next two volumes. Still love him to bits!
I’d love to read your thoughts. Any are welcome!
